Development Type:

Canterbury requires the greatest amount of irrigated land in NZ, and this scheme is the largest of them all. This project includes the diversion of water from the Waimakariri and Rakaia Rivers into a purpose built reservoir before transferring it via canals through the agricultural landscape to the east coast. We undertook a landscape assessment of the project as well as expert evidence to determine what landscape changes and effects would occur with new structures (dam, canals and reservoir) and “greening” of the Canterbury landscape. Considerable effort was put into creating 3-D simulations of the various features such as intake structures and canals at key locations.
