Mt Cook Visitor Centre

Mackenzie District, Canterbury

Our team was engaged to design the landscape for the Visitor Centre at Mt Cook. This is the primary tourism facility at Mt Cook Village where people can learn about the human and natural history of the area. Our landscape design included an alpine style garden and grounds surrounding the visitor centre. We also worked to integrate the surrounding infrastructure such as the road and car park so as to minimise it's impact on this sensitive landscape. Separating the road from the building and “stepping” the car park down the hill were the main objectives. Use of local materials, a relocated historic hut, rock features, bridges, paths and alpine plants all contribute to an alpine experience, enhanced sense of arrival and linkages with the surrounding facilities.
