Development Type:

Wangaloa coal mine was once an opencast mine covering an area of approximately 75 hectares and surrounded by native forest cover and pastoral farms. As well as being an extensive exercise in landscape restoration (contouring and revegetation), it was important the site be beneficial to local residents. Interpretation trails, mountain bike tracks, museum sites utilising old machinery, climbing activities and bird watching sites have been planned in conjunction with the revegetation, creating an appealing recreation area with an underlying heritage value.
